Cumaru Decking Facts

When we hear back from our customers, they all tell us the same thing, "We LOVE our new Cumaru deck!" But, why?
This page details cumaru's many benefits as well as some interesting facts. If you want to know why you should buy cumaru decking and what you can expect, then this is the place to look.
Physical Description
Cumaru decking's color varies from a golden tan to a reddish brown with some dark grain accents through out the wood. The resulting blend of warm hues creates an inviting backyard retreat with a unique look that you will love relaxing in. Over time, as the wood is exposed to the sun's UV rays, the color will fade to a beautifully mature silver-gray. If you prefer the original appearance, the color change can be prevented by applying a coat of UV finish.
Mechanical Properties
This wood has a bending strength of 14,793 psi. This makes it extremely resilient and difficult to break, an important feature when looking for deck materials which will have to constantly support the collective weight of friends, family, and elements like snow. The last thing you want is for someone to fall through your deck thanks to a weak and broken board. Cumaru also has a Janka Hardness Rating of 3540, which is near the top of the scale. That's roughly 8x harder than California Redwood! This hardness protects the surface from dents and scratches, as well as other destructive threats.
Durability
Cumaru is very durable. The heartwood has proven to be very durable in resistance to both brown-rot and white rot fungi, and it has excellent weathering characteristics. With hardly any maintenance at all, a cumaru deck can last over 50 years! Expect it to last longer if you take good care of it.
Origin
The cumaru tree (Dipteryx Odorata) grows in South America, mainly Brazil. It also goes by the names Almendrillo, Brazilian Teak, Tonka, and Tonquin Bean. The tree bears fruit and is cultivated in many areas for these tonka beans, which are used as a vanilla-like flavoring.
